My hair has always been a source of consternation for me- taming my natural wavy, frizz prone hair has been a lifelong learning experience. When I discovered the pricey salon brands the monthly investment definitely made my hair look and feel better. However, recent research has made me change my mind:
Reason no. 1: Getting rid of as many toxins from life as I could
I discovered much to my shocking disappointment, that my salon brand shampoo, that I have used on and off since my early twenties contains the following:
- Isobutylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben- these are all parabens which mimic oestrogen and disrupt hormone levels
- ‘Fragrance’ and Lillial – associated with allergies and immunotoxcitity
- And a long list of other ingredients with known effects on our health
If you want to check your own shampoo (or other products) visit www.ewg.org/skindeep and search the product name or ingredients.
Reason no. 2: The fantastic therapeutic benefits of essential oils
Instead of just cutting out the harmful stuff, after discovering the properties of essential oils, I wanted ADD the good stuff. The shampoo I’ve switched to after ditching my salon brand is specifically for dry and damaged hair and contains Copaiba essential oil, along with Lavender, Geranium and Lime. These are known for hair strengthening and conditioning (Copaiba and Geranium), conditioning, shine and promoting growth (Lavender), and cleansing while moisturising (Lime). And bonus- it smells amazing along with the addition of vanilla absolute!
Reason no. 3: The price!
While my new natural shampooing conditioner fro Young Living costs roughly the same as my salon brand did, I get wholesale price, as well as 20% of the cost back in points as part of their rewards programme which I can use to buy products for free so my new natural, gorgeous smelling and hormone disruptor-free shampoo actually costs me less overall!
If you want to know how to get your hands on plan based natural alternatives for all your personal care products and qualify for wholesale prices and rewards points towards future purchases see our website here for more details.
